A group of Urunga residents has called a public meeting for next Tuesday (January 25) to gauge community support for a ‘Tidal Swimming Facility’ on the site of the old Sea Lido, adjacent to the boardwalk.
They would prefer the tidal facility to utilise the lido site rather than a second option on the riverbank below the entertainment stage in the Morgo Street Reserve.
The Tidal Swimming Facility Steering Committee says the old lido site has several advantages.
“The facilities and infrastructure are already here,” they said. “There’s a car park, children’s playground and the boardwalk closeby and not too far away is the caravan park and local businesses.”
The Committee says the car park for the other site is too far away for the elderly and disabled, who were among the biggest users of the old Sea Lido.
“Dredging the area would also enhance the lagoon which has been neglected by all concerned for many years. It was a wonderful fish nursery, but the seagrasses have disappeared and the water quality needs monitoring.
“Initially, we would like to see the site dredged and then a retaining wall constructed to stop erosion from storm surges and maybe pontoons in the river.
