RUNNING THROUGH 2011

Here we go – one picture a month for 2011 of life here in the Bellingen Shire.

DECEMBER 2010 – a trifle early but it will give me the full 12 months.

Here’s a treat. THE SUDDEN COMFORT MOTEL. Urunga doesn’t do very well with motels. Just a few along the Highway. IN fact, the whole shire is lacking in accommodation of the motel variety.

It surely is difficult to beat a Bates Motel on an old highway that goes by the name of SUDDEN COMFORT.

JANUARY 2011

It was a good year for birds here in Raleigh. All manner of birds. I don’t know most of the names but I do know the kookaburra and the jabiru and the wee kingfisher as well as our lorikeets which come each day in their dozens.

Bellingen is a busy town these days but there are still occasions on which peace reigns. Hyde Street, Bellingen – with Dog.

MARCH 2011

In March 2011, Scrubby the Scrub Turkey came to  live with us. Caused havoc. Tore the Succulent Garden apart. Pretended it was a chook or a lorikeet. Chased the cats and terrorised the foxes. Scrubby disappeared this week along with the 2 chooks and I am not that sorry to have him gone but he did add colour to daily life.

APRIL 2011

2011 was better than the last few years as regards flooding and rain but there were still moments – and days. Even the critters despaired at times.

MAY 2011

The Shire has abeautiful stretch of beaches including 3rd Headland on the Southern End.

JUNE 2011

In Church Street are the cafes. Not all of them but they call it the café precinct. Black Bear is  the one we frequent most often but it’s a good row of eateries. Daytime mostly though I believe the new No 5 Church St is 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.

JULY 2011

Yellow Rock Road which runs from Raleigh to Urunga is worth a drive around. It follows the river most of the way. The 2009 floods hit it pretty hard and 2 years later some repairs are only just completed like this restored shed and fences.

AUGUST 2011

2011 also saw the construction of the Church Street ‘Urban Precinct’. Cost a lot. Caused controversy and I have still to see people use it. Just past the Bean Café it is. I haven’t been to Bean. I’m not saying why, Could be just fine.

SEPTEMBER 2011

Another of the buildings  trashed by the 2009 floods was the URUNGA MUSEUM. It re-opened in September after two years of dedicated volunteer work. I know its open on Tuesday and Wednesday and is well worth a look.

OCTOBER 2011

And then last month, the inaugral BELLINGEN RIVER FESTIVAL was held. Spot on . Perfect.

Repton is one of the villages in Bellingen Shire. It had a Post Office and general store till the floods of 2009 washed them away – more or less. The trees are tall and the architecture stunning.  The roads wind and twist. Nearby is the Community of Bundagen. They have café there on Tuesdays. Fine foods and excellent atmosphere.

There is an excellent traditional caravan park at Repton. BELLINGER VALLEY TOURIST something or other. The atmosphere at the Park is friendly and relaxed and vibrant.

Repton has a Butchery. Perry’s it is , up on top of the hill and a school down the bottom beside the Bellinger River. I used to teach there as a casual.

It appears that there is a hidden speed camera someplace there as well but I don’t know anything about it.
